This is a personal story, but in Paris I have a crochet with lots of keys attached to it and hanging it around my neck. It's heavy and looks too obvious when I leave it hanging, so I put it in the breast pocket of my shirt in the summer and in the inside pocket of my jacket in the winter. Even if you don't wear it around your neck, another good way to use it is to thread it through the handle of your bag and keep it inside.
